The organ is, with the instruments in Rysum, Sion and Ostönnen, among the oldest playable organs of the world. Altered several times over the centuries, it is the oldest playable organ in Hessen and is often described as being the « oldest organ in Germany ». False interpretations of the pipe numbering led, for example, to the presumed year of its construction as being 1313. In fact, this organ was not built until around 1500, although neither the exact year nor the builder are known.

Based on researches carried out by Father Zaun who came to the parish on January 1st, 1869, a new organ replaced an old one in 1380 and only an extension to the church, carried out in 1491, could have provided the necessary space for the actual organ.

Around 1500, an organ from an unknown organbuilder was installed in a swallow's nest on the west wall. It was probably a one-manual instrument. In 1652-1653, Johann Wendelin Kirchner rebuilt the wind system and the traction while probably carrying out modifications on the pipework. He added a Positive division as second manual. Repairs are carried out in 1686 and 1692. Elias Salvianer completely restored the organ in 1710. For the first time, in the contract, an 8-voice Hauptwerk and a 6-voice Ruckpositiv are mentioned. An independent pedal division obviously did not exist; it was added, according to Zaun, in 1722. Five repairs were carried out between 1715 and 1746. In 1760, a baroque marble imitation painting is applied to the organcase. From 1768 to 1806, ten repairs are carried out. Around 1800, the organ was no longer in use. It was deemed as being irreparable, but, due to lack of financial resources, it was not replaced by a new instrument.

Not until the Romantic enthusiasm for the Gothic period and its bringing back to life through the Gothic Revival led to a change of opinion. English Baron John Sutton (1820-1873) discovered this gem in 1857 and decided to have the church and its organ restored to their Gothic origins. Sutton selected Belgian organbuilder Louis-Benoît Hooguys to carry out the works on the instrumental part and August Martin, from Fürch, to restore the finish on the case and the doors. The first works, carried out in 1858, concerned the backgrounds of the instrument. The study was completed in 1860 and was badly documented. Sutton financed the renovation of the elements he rated worthy of preservation and the reconstruction of the lost parts. The project costs him over 6000 gulden.

The Positiv division, coming from the Baroque era, and the Pedal division were installed behind the organ in the tower and the supposed Late-Gothic organcase was restored while the layout was modified and the voicing is preserved. Hooghuys revised the old elements and inserted the new. The old structure of the main organcase was preserved and was restored, while the wooden ornamental elements, the neo-Gothic finials among the pipework, were new. The gussets under the lateral towers, the painted wing doors as well as the whole neo-Gothic platform were also reconstructed. The new Pedal division integrated partly older pipework whose construction method and the engraving resemble those of Georg and Peter Geissel, Kirchner's masters. Some pipework was from the 18th century while the major part came from Hooghuys in the 19th century. In a 1970/1971 renovation, an 1875 pedal stop was substituted.

Part of the Gothic facade received, at least five different, overlapping colors. The wing doors are probably still original. Concerning material and design, the metal pipework can be assigned to ten different groups. The iron stop action and the wind system of the main organcase date from 1653. In 1860, a 16-note pedalboard was installed and the short octave in the manual comes from the installation of a shortened, used keyboard. The stop action layout of the Positiv and the Pedal comes from Hooghuys.

Before the last restoration, carried out by Kuhn, from Männedorf (Switzerland), between 1985 and 1987, took place, it was first necessary to define a specific aim of the restoration. In agreement with the Authority for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments and those responsible from the Diocese of Limburg, the conclusion was reached that only the reconstruction of the instrument of 1860 (Sutton) came into question. Attempting to reconstruct the instrument as it was at an earlier stage (meanwhile a Rückpositiv had been added to the organ) would have meant relying on too many hypotheses. In addition, Sutton's overall achievements were, in themselves, deemed as being worthy of protection. Through his involvement, the old organ was not only freed of its Baroque elements and given back its Gothic splendour, but the whole church, including its furnishings, became a « treasure trove of the Gothic period » in which Gothic and Gothic Revival elements blend into each other. For some elements, for example the bellows system and the temperament, it was decided to return to the state of 1653 and a modified meantone temperament was applied.

Only the Hauptwerk is visible which is a single manual Gothic organ with doors. The additional divisions (Positiv and Pedal Organ) are out of view and located in the tower chamber behind the organcase. This chamber also houses the wedge-bellows system.

The instrument was inaugurated on April 19th, 1987.

In 2014, the instrument was throughly cleaned and tuned.

This valuable instrument blends Late-Gothic and neo-Gothic elements into a harmonious whole.

Voor mij niet nodig. Super bedankt. Erg informatief.

http://www.pcorgel.nl/viewtopic.php?p=28413#p28413
https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=en&tl=nl&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcorgel.nl%2Fviewtopic.php%3Fp%3D28413%23p28413

Niets dus doen via Word of anderszins
